Coding Bootcamps Are Getting Caught Falsifying Their Job Placement Claims

Flatiron was just fined $375,000 by the New York Attorney General for falsifying its job placement claim on his website. You can check out the news here.

Apparently their job placement rate for a full-time position is closer to 45%, instead of 98.5%. That's a big difference, isn't it? This should help future applicants make the right choice when it comes to deciding to quit their jobs and take on a loan. This didn't come as a surprise to me though, given my discussions with alumnis from other Bootcamps - namely Galvanize and General Assembly.

  • In one instance an alumni shared with me how his cohort asked for a full refund given how little they felt they learned in their session due to a really bad instructor,
  • In another instance the alumni couldn't find a job in the tech industry, and ended-up taking a completely unrelated part-time position in order to repay her loan. Only to realize that she was still reported by the Bootcamp in their successful job placement rate!

This is one of the reason why we decided to open nucamp: to remove this difficult choice out of the equation for our learners and career changers. You don't have to quit your current job, and you don't have to take on a loan to learn high quality coding curriculum with experienced instructors.
With this approach we also find liberating to not have to justify the investment in time and money with ridiculously high job placement rates.
At nucamp we promise you a great education and experience, and the acquisition of skills to get a great job. We offer support for you to find and apply to these job opportunities. The truth is it's hard, and not everyone will be successful at first. It will take patience, perseverance, hard work and a little bit of luck.
